‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?

Light-based treatment is clearly enjoying a wave of attention. Consumers can purchase light-emitting tools targeting issues like skin conditions and wrinkles as well as sore muscles and periodontal issues, the newest innovation is an oral care tool enhanced with tiny red LEDs, described by its makers as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Globally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. There are even infrared saunas available, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, stimulating skin elasticity, easing muscle tension, reducing swelling and chronic health conditions and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.

Research and Reservations

“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” says a neuroscience expert, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Of course, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, additionally, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Sunlight-imitating lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to combat seasonal emotional slumps. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.

Different Light Modalities

Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. In rigorous scientific studies, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, finding the right frequency is key. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, extending from long-wavelength radiation to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Therapeutic light application utilizes intermediate light frequencies, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and infrared light visible through night vision technology.

UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and suppresses swelling,” says a dermatology expert. “Considerable data validates phototherapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (typically emitting red, infrared or blue wavelengths) “generally affect surface layers.”

Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

The side-effects of UVB exposure, like erythema or pigmentation, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – signifying focused frequency bands – which minimises the risks. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, meaning intensity is regulated,” says Ho. And crucially, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – different from beauty salons, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Red and blue light sources, he notes, “aren’t typically employed clinically, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, help boost blood circulation, oxygen absorption and cell renewal in the skin, and activate collagen formation – an important goal for anti-aging. “Studies are available,” states the dermatologist. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, proper positioning requirements, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, a microbe associated with acne. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – although, explains the specialist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”

Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms

Meanwhile, in innovative scientific domains, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he reports. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that claims seem exaggerated. But his research has thoroughly changed his mind in that respect.

Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he says. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, which most thought had no biological effect.”

The advantage it possessed, however, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, enabling deeper tissue penetration.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy for them to function. “Every cell in your body has mitochondria, including the brain,” says Chazot, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In low doses this substance, notes the scientist, “triggers guardian proteins that maintain organelle health, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”

Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and waste removal – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.

Present Investigation Status and Expert Assessments
