The England manager Expresses Disappointment Over Home Crowd Support Despite Emphatic Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment that the England team did not receive stronger encouragement from the home crowd during their impressive triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his squad maintain their good form, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter effectively ending the match. But, he was not content with the energy at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half sessions to get ready against a organized team and we performed excellently,” the coach remarked. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the additional ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get support from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you deliver in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s regrettable because the squad warranted more support today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than being 3-0 in a derby. I would have wished for a bit more support in phases where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to refocus, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Display
Apart from potentially starting a fight with fans, Tuchel also created controversy by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. However the choice was backed up by Morgan Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his position.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who host a strong Belgian side in a important World Cup qualifier on Monday, improve after their poor performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this friendly,” Bellamy stated. “I wanted to assess our standing. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance fills me with inspiration.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Watkins was substituted at half-time after clattering into a post and may miss out when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
